EVIDENCE OF HUI YUEN
BOARD THE "KWONG TUNG"
PASSENGER ON
AFFIRMED.
54
My name is Hui Yuen and I was za passenger on
board the "Kwong Tung". I bought my ticket on the
wharf from the shipping company. I was not told the
amount of baggage I could take on board. I was 10 feet
from where the fire broke out. I saw a man carrying a
bag collide with a woman carrying two sacks on a bamboo
pole.
Something inside the man's bag was broken and a
liquid fell from the bag. Imediately afterwards smoke
came from the liquid spilled on the deck. People became
panicky and started to run. I ran forward but I could
not get off the ship so I was forced to remain on board
until the fire was extinguished. Some of the liquid fell
on the deck and some on a sack carried by a woman who
later dropped it. There was baggage lying around the
starboard ladder but it would not have interfered with
the use of the ladder.
The lights failed at one period for about 10 minutes
I saw the man carrying the bag walk forward and I noticed
smoke or fumes coming from the bag. I have never seen
the man since.
The foregoing is a true record
of the evidence I have given.
Sa. Hui Yuen.
